A Bit About Me

Jim Hall, founder of Guitar Superstar

The year was 1963 when a toy guitar accidentally fell into my hands — I was seven years old and on my way to Australia. It was pure luck that I eventually learnt to play guitar in the wild Australian outback, as the idea of having guitar lessons without any parents or money in the middle of the wide, sun–burnt Australian Bush was impossible, crazy! Against the odds, I came across a Shadows–style instrumental band, rehearsing in a corrugated tin shack in the middle of the bush, their musical equipment powered by a noisy generator. Peering through the gaps in the corrugated tin, I looked on as the band strummed and plucked their fabulous Fender Stratocasters, and I wondered if I could ever do that myself. Then, one of the band members caught sight of me and asked me if I wanted to come in and watch. He was the lead guitarist, a heart and soul player who was my first teacher, whether he considered himself to be or not! I learnt a lot from my first mentor, common–sense guitar stuff that is still with me today. But more importantly, he gave me the confidence to take my first step on a magical journey, a musical road that has taken me far on that elusive, never ending quest to become a Guitar Superstar.
